DESCRIPTION;LANGUAGE=en-US:Hi\,\n\nSOCAAR is pleased to announce our next s
eminar in our 2014-2015 seminar series.\n\nDecember 3\, 2014\, 3 – 4 PM\
nWallberg Building\, 200 College Street\, Room 407\n\n\nTowards understand
ing the burden of outdoor air pollution in Ontario: recent research\n\nDr.
Hong Chen\nScientist\nEnvironmental Health Assessment\nPublic Health Onta
rio\n\n\nExposure to ambient air pollution is a major public health proble
m throughout the world\, with an estimated 3.2 million premature deaths ar
ising from this exposure globally in 2010. Air pollution epidemiologic res
earch has played a crucial role in quantifying the global burden of air po
llution and in informing policies that can yield maximal population health
benefits. In recent years\, the major interests in air pollution epidemio
logic research have been focused on: (1) understanding the impact of air p
ollution on the development of major chronic diseases and (2) characterizi
ng variation in the distribution of risk within a population (i.e.\, popul
ation susceptibility).\nIn this talk\, I will first present a recent popul
ation-based cohort study that examined the effect of long-term exposure to
fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on the development of diabetes in Ontario
. Next\, I will show main results from another cohort study that assessed
the association between long-term exposure to PM2.5 and survival after acu
te myocardial infarction (AMI) in Ontario. Lastly\, I will discuss the bur
den of post-AMI mortality attributed to exposure to PM2.5 in Ontario\, est
imated using the approach from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2010.\n\
n\n\nIf you are unable to join us for the seminar in person\, we will be b
roadcasting the presentations live during the seminar using GoToMeeting so
ftware. Please feel free to join us online using a web-browser or by calli
ng in and using the webviewing software. If you do decide to join us\, ple
ase remember to mute your microphone. If you have any questions during th
e meeting you are welcome to contact me by email\, or by using the GoToMee
