Subject: [ACLA] Iowa State University: Position in Biliteracy Education

IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

An Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer

ESTER CATHERINE HARMON ENDOWED PROFESSOR OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR POSITION IN BILITERACY EDUCATION

The School of Education in the College of Human Sciences at Iowa State University seeks a senior leader as a Professor or Associate Professor in Biliteracy Education. For the newly created Ester Catherine Harmon Endowed Professorship, we seek a dynamic colleague who will synergize work in educator preparation within the School of Education and language education within the Department of World Languages and Cultures in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The goal of the Harmon Professor will be to help develop ISU’s potential to prepare teachers and school leaders who will work to promote quality education through biliteracy and multiculturalism. This will benefit not only the state’s growing school-aged population but broaden the educational experiences of all Iowa youth in acknowledgement of the cognitive, social, and economic advantages of bilingualism in the 21st century.

Iowa State University (ISU) is a top tier research institution with a land grant mission to serve its communities. The Harmon Endowed Professor will provide leadership with respect to this mission by focusing on educational improvement through dual immersion, bilingual, and heritage language programming for students who are speakers of English as a second or additional language. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to additive approaches to cultural and linguistic diversity through a strong record of scholarship on bilingual, heritage language development, and dual immersion as promising models for learners at the elementary level.

The Iowa State University School of Education has a mission to educate, challenge, and prepare the leaders of tomorrow. Our program strengths are STEM education, instructional technology, leadership, diversity, social justice, and student affairs. These areas of interest not only benefit our students – they benefit the world.

Iowa State University is a highly regarded research institution, and our School of Education follows its lead. We are home to acclaimed faculty members who are shaping our country’s educational systems through their research.

Our rigorous program draws in students from around the country who want to learn from the best and brightest in education. Our faculty members not only teach – they inspire so their students can go on to inspire others after they graduate.

ISU is located in Ames, IA, one of the nation’s most highly rated metropolitan areas of its size (http://www.iastate.edu/about/ames.php). Centrally located with respect to several of the state’s most demographically transitioning communities, ISU affords faculty access to culturally- and linguistically-diverse school environments for research, teaching, and service commitments, including a new university-school partnership serving two elementary schools in urban Des Moines neighborhoods with growing Latino populations.

Iowa State University is classified as a Carnegie Foundation Doctoral/Research University-Extensive, a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), and ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top public universities in the nation. Over 34,000 students are enrolled, and served by over 6,100 faculty and staff (see www.iastate.edu). Ames, Iowa is a progressive community of 60,000, located approximately 30 minutes north of Des Moines, and recently voted second best most livable small city in the nation (see www.amescvb.com).

Iowa State University is an equal opportunity employer committed to excellence through diversity and strongly encourages applications from all qualified applicants, including women, underrepresented minorities, and veterans. ISU is responsive to the needs of dual career couples, is dedicated to work-life balance through an array of policies, and is an NSF ADVANCE institution.
