Investigating the Role of Transportation Models in Epidemiologic Studies of Traffic Related Air Pollution and Health Effects

A brief description will be presented of the research activities on environmental topics carried out at the Chemical Engineering Department of the University of São Paulo. The focus is on studies on air quality
monitoring, and on the development of statistical models to predict ground-level air pollutants in the São Paulo Metropolitan Area, and in surrounding industrial sites.
Among the statistical models, neural networks and other pattern recognition techniques have been fit to historical air quality data to predict ozone levels in different areas of the São Paulo Metropolitan Area,
and have been implemented by the local control authority.
Research results will also be shown on the application of optical remote sensing techniques (Lidar) to monitor industrial atmospheric emissions of pollutants .
