DESCRIPTION;LANGUAGE=en-US:Hi Everyone\,\n\nSOCAAR is pleased to announce o
ur next seminar:\n\n\n\n\n\nFebruary 3\, 2016\,\n\n3 – 4 PM\n200 College
Street\, WB 215\n\n\n\nChronic Exposure to Atmospheric Secondary Organic
Particulate Matter Enhances Airway Hyper-responsiveness to Methacholine\n\

work\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExposure to air pollution increases the incidence and
morbidity of cardiorespiratory diseases. Air pollutants are a complex mixt
ure of gases and particulate matter (PM)\, which is comprised of Secondary
Organic Aerosols (SOA)\, formed through the oxidation of biogenic and ant
hropogenic emissions. Experimental models to evaluate the physiological an
d cellular pathways activated by chronic exposures are limited. We recentl
y developed an experimental platform that permits chronic exposure of PM a
nd gases to allow us to evaluate the health effects of relevant pollutants
at “real-life” levels.\n\nHealthy female 8-10 week old Balb/c mice we
re exposed for 1 hr/day for 3 consecutive days to naphthalene SOA which wa
s maintained at constant levels (10-150 mg/m3) to simulate street level PM
concentration during exposures. Results showed that chronic daily exposur
es to naphthalene SOA increased airway responsiveness to methacholine in a
dose-dependent manner\, and the responsiveness was significantly increase
d when compared to control filter-air exposed mice. BALF total and differe
ntial cell counts were similar in all groups\, suggesting that increased a
irway responsiveness was not associated with airway inflammation. Gene exp
ression and histological analyses are in progress.\n\n\n\nIf you are unabl
e to join us for the seminar in person\, we will be broadcasting the prese
ntations live during the seminar using GoToMeeting software. Please feel f
ree to join us online using a web-browser or by calling in and using the w
ebviewing software. If you do decide to join us\, please remember to mute
your microphone. If you have any questions during the meeting you are wel
come to contact me by email\, or by using the GoToMeeting chat.\n\n\n\n1.
