Vantage College and Arts Studies in Research and Writing (12-month lecturer)

18 Mar, 2016

The University of British Columbia, Vancouver invites applications for one full-time 12-month lecturer position in Arts Studies in Research and Writing (ASRW), Faculty of Arts (http://asrw.arts.ubc.ca<http://asrw.arts.ubc.ca/>) and Vantage College, the University’s international program (http://vantagecollege.ubc.ca). This position offers opportunities to pursue a career in teaching at the university level, while engaging in innovative curriculum design and pedagogy in a collaborative teaching and learning community.

UBC Vantage College offers first-year curriculum in a cohort learning program to academically strong international students whose English language proficiency does not yet meet the English language requirements for direct admission into UBC. Students take courses in Arts, Science, Engineering, or Management before transferring into second year in their degree program. The primary goals of the Vantage College curriculum are: (1) to encourage students’ cultural, linguistic, and academic engagement in disciplinary communities and (2) to maximize students’ successful transition to year two in the Faculties of Arts, Science, Applied Science, or Management. Instructors in Vantage College work with peers from departments across faculties to develop, implement, and share innovative teaching practices and curricula.

The successful candidate will teach in two programs: UBC Vantage One Arts and UBC Vantage One Management. In these programs, students undertake a coordinated curriculum that provides instruction in social scientific ways of thinking, speaking, and writing. UBC Vantage One Arts coordinates Arts courses in Geography, Political Science, Psychology, and Research Writing for students wishing to progress into the Faculty of Arts; UBC Vantage One Management coordinates Arts courses in Psychology, Economics, Sociology, and Research Writing for students wishing to progress into the Faculty of Management at UBC’s Okanagan campus, in Kelowna. Embedded language instruction and an English for Academic Purposes course support students’ learning in both programs.

This full-time 12-Month Lectureship position, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2016, is a one-year appointment (non-tenure track), with the possibility of renewal on a yearly basis subject to availability of funds, excellent performance, and compliance with University policies. The successful candidate is expected to carry a teaching load of 24 credits plus service, and to work closely with members of the instructional teams at UBC Vantage College and in ASRW. Specifically, s/he will be expected to contribute to curriculum and materials development, collaborate with instructors in Vantage College and ASRW, and contribute to each unit through service on committees. The appointment will be held in ASRW, but 18 credits of teaching and service workload will be dedicated to UBC Vantage College, while 6 credits of teaching will be in ASRW.

The 18-credit load responsibility in UBC Vantage College includes sections of the following courses:

  * WRDS 150: Research and Writing in the Humanities and Social Sciences
  * ASTU 204: Topics in Interdisciplinary Arts Studies
  * VANT 148: UBC Vantage College Projects
  * VANT 149: Multidisciplinary Research Project

In addition, the successful candidate can expect to teach 6 credits (i.e., two 3-credit courses) for ASRW including WRDS 150 and ASTU 400A, and participate in designing the future growth and development of ASRW, a unit specializing in the study and teaching of research and writing in the disciplines. ASRW courses introduce Arts students to the discursive practices of the disciplines. Members of the unit also support undergraduate student participation in research activities (e.g. conference participation) and assist faculty who offer writing-intensive courses in their departments.

Applicants will have a doctorate in a relevant field, including Writing Studies, Composition, Rhetoric, Applied Linguistics, Language and Literacy Studies, or a doctorate and equivalent experience teaching academic writing in university environments using research-based, theoretically rich pedagogical frameworks. Evidence of teaching excellence is required; evidence of successful team building and collaboration would be an asset. A keen interest in the scholarship of teaching and learning is expected.
