Assistant Teaching Professor (Academic Writing)

The Department of English seeks to appoint an Assistant Teaching Professor in academic writing. The appointment will be effective 1 September 2016, or as soon as possible after that date.

The successful applicant will join an exciting, collegial department with an outstanding record in both teaching and research, and a University community that strongly supports training in writing across disciplines.

The responsibility of the position is to teach courses that fulfill or are closely allied with the University’s Academic Writing Requirement (AWR): English 101, 135, 146 and 147, and Engineering 110, 120, and/or 240.

Requirements

The successful candidate must have

  *   an advanced degree in a relevant field (PhD preferred) or equivalent experience;
  *   an excellent track record of teaching university and/or college writing, especially at the first- and/or the second-year level;
  *   the capacity to engage in research in the pedagogy of writing and more broadly in the scholarship of teaching and learning;
  *   the capacity to undertake duties in the service of the Academic Writing Requirement; and
  *   the capacity to undertake the training, assessment, and mentoring of instructors in academic writing.

Training and/or experience in the following areas will be considered an asset:

  *   teaching EAL (English as an additional language);
  *   teaching technical or scientific writing;
  *   developing curriculum related to EAL, Indigenous pedagogies, or technical or scientific writing.

Additional information

In accordance with the Collective Agreement, Assistant Teaching Professors may apply for reappointment and after reappointment, may apply for promotion to Associate Teaching Professor; Associate Teaching Professors with a strong record in both teaching and scholarship of teaching and learning may apply for promotion to become a tenured Teaching Professor.
