ters are widely utilized in residential heating\, ventilation\, and air co
nditioning (HAVC) systems in residences to reduce concentrations of partic
ulate matter. However\, few studies have examined the actual in-situ effic
iency and effectiveness of filters in real homes. In this study\, we measu
red in-situ efficiency\, short- and long-term effectiveness of 4 types of
high efficiency filters (MERV 8\, MERV 8E\, MERV 11E and MERV 14E) in 21 h
omes with forced-air system in Toronto over the course of a year-long inve
stigation. The results show that the filters with higher nominal efficienc
y from a laboratory test usually also have higher efficiency when installe
d in homes\, although efficiency for many filters declines over time. Howe
ver\, the effectiveness of filter is context specific and is influenced by
a wide range of factors including the air tightness of the house\, HVAC s
ystem flow and runtime\, activity patterns\, and sources in the home. Many
homes have low filtration effectiveness\, even with high efficiency filte
rs. Thus\, context is essential when selecting filters for residential bui
