neral Engineering\nUniversity of Toronto\n\nAbstract: High efficiency filt
ers are widely utilized in residential heating\, ventilation\, and air con
ditioning (HAVC) systems in residences to reduce concentrations of particu
late matter. However\, few studies have examined the actual in-situ effici
ency and effectiveness of filters in real homes. In this study\, we measur
ed in-situ efficiency\, short- and long-term effectiveness of 4 types of h
igh efficiency filters (MERV 8\, MERV 8E\, MERV 11E and MERV 14E) in 21 ho
mes with forced-air system in Toronto over the course of a year-long inves
tigation. The results show that the filters with higher nominal efficiency
from a laboratory test usually also have higher efficiency when installed
in homes\, although efficiency for many filters declines over time. Howev
er\, the effectiveness of filter is context specific and is influenced by
a wide range of factors including the air tightness of the house\, HVAC sy
stem flow and runtime\, activity patterns\, and sources in the home. Many
homes have low filtration effectiveness\, even with high efficiency filter
s. Thus\, context is essential when selecting filters for residential buil
