Why There Will Be No Cures

There will be no one-shot cures for Alzheimer’s, ALS, Parkinson’s, heart disease or spinal cord injury because they diminish the patient pool too much to be profitable.

How many cures do you know of? None. Polio and small pox were prevented, not cured. Big Pharma profits when it produces
drugs, most worse than the disease itself, that provide a stable incident pool.

For example, in 2015 Gilead Sciences marketed a treatment for hepatitis C that had a cure rate of 90% and sales peaked at $21.5 billion. Goldman Sachs analysts have estimated that due to cures that have diminished the patient pool, Gilead will only realize $4 billion this year. Gilead executives received over $39 million in compensation in 2017 and Chairman John C. Martin got over $7 million in 2017 down from $18 million in 2015.

The problem is bigger than health care for all. We need the kind of health care that cures and does not include the profit motive. Is there anything we can do about this?

This obsession with the virtues of capitalism and fear of "socialism" needs to be reassessed. Health care like education should not be for financial gain. The real profit would be greater production and creativity which would benefit all members of society.

Voting for Democrats rather than Republicans, although an important first step, would not solve this problem immediately, but at least they haven’t spent the last 82 years ( my age) trying to get rid of Social Security.
