Challenges and Opportunities for Residential Filtration

Amy (Tianyuan) Li

PhD Candidate

Department of Civil & Mineral Engineering

University of Toronto

Abstract: High efficiency filters are widely utilized in residential heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HAVC) systems in residences to reduce concentrations of particulate matter. However, few studies have examined the actual in-situ efficiency and effectiveness of filters in real homes. In this study, we measured in-situ efficiency, short- and long-term effectiveness of 4 types of high efficiency filters (MERV 8, MERV 8E, MERV 11E and MERV 14E) in 21 homes with forced-air system in Toronto over the course of a year-long investigation. The results show that the filters with higher nominal efficiency from a laboratory test usually also have higher efficiency when installed in homes, although efficiency for many filters declines over time. However, the effectiveness of filter is context specific and is influenced by a wide range of factors including the air tightness of the house, HVAC system flow and runtime, activity patterns, and sources in the home. Many homes have low filtration effectiveness, even with high efficiency filters. Thus, context is essential when selecting filters for residential buildings.

If you are unable to join us for the seminar in person, we will be broadcasting the presentations live during the seminar using GoToMeeting software. Please feel free to join us online using a web-browser or by calling in and using the web-viewing software. If you do decide to join us, please remember to mute your microphone. If you have any questions during the meeting you are welcome to contact me by email, or by using the GoToMeeting chat.
