How awful and sad John.   Is there a special circle, a little corner of torment for the worm who steals a brave Bible from a small village .  There certainly ought to be!

So sad to miss you all in Toronto this year — my annual self-care treat.  SHREW is, well, shrewish.

Cheers,
Suzanne

Subject: Stolen Bible

Dear Scottish Medievalists,

A message sent on behalf of Dr Ralph Moffat (Glasgow Museums), asking us all to keep alert!

Best wishes,
Eila.

Dear Sir,
I am writing to ask you to inform Stranraer police if anyone tries to sell the museum the" Treacle Bible" which was stolen from the Old Kirk (Kirk Covenant), outside Drummore village, at the end of June when the Kirk was open to visitors. The bolts were removed from the glass case where it had been displayed for many, many years.
Before the King James Bible of 1611 pre-reformation translators were risking their lives if they translated the scriptures from Latin or Greek into English. It was considered heresy, a capital offence punishable by burning.
This 1549 edition of the Great Bible has been referred to as "The Treacle Bible" because of a verse in Jeremiah which says, "Is there not triacle in Gilead". "Treacle", variously spelt, is an old English name for ointment or balm.
Could you please distribute this information to anyone else that you think might be offered the Bible? It is thought that if the thief/thieves intend to sell it they might lie low for a couple of years so it would be great if you could keep this information on your records.
                                                                                    Yours Faithfully,
                                                                                       Sheila Cook.
