us studies have shown that non-smoking\, single-family homes with attached
garages have higher indoor levels of certain air pollutants\, including b
enzene\, CO\, and NO2\, compared to homes without. This is of concern give
n that approximately 61% of all Canadian dwellings have an attached garage
. Various strategies to reduce residential exposures to pollutants origina
ting from attached garages have been proposed\, including maintaining a ne
gative pressure in the garage with respect to the indoor living space\, se
aling penetrations from the living area into the garage\, and implementing
behavioral changes such as parking the car outside. This presentation des
cribes a joint research project undertaken by Health Canada and the Nation
al Research Council Canada to test the effectiveness of two separate inter
ventions\, exhaust ventilation in the garage and improved sealing of the g
arage-house interface wall\, to reduce the ingress of polluted air from th
e attached garage into the adjoining home. This study demonstrated that th
ese two methods were practical\, low cost\, and effective interventions to
reduce air infiltration from attached garages into adjoining living space
s and reducing occupant exposures to harmful pollutants.\n\n\nIf you are u
