Reducing Canadian’s Exposures to Harmful Pollutants Originating from Attached Garages
Dr. Daniel Aubin

Abstract: Previous studies have shown that non-smoking, single-family homes with attached garages have higher indoor levels of certain air pollutants, including benzene, CO, and NO2, compared to homes without. This is of concern given that approximately 61% of all Canadian dwellings have an attached garage. Various strategies to reduce residential exposures to pollutants originating from attached garages have been proposed, including maintaining a negative pressure in the garage with respect to the indoor living space, sealing penetrations from the living area into the garage, and implementing behavioral changes such as parking the car outside. This presentation describes a joint research project undertaken by Health Canada and the National Research Council Canada to test the effectiveness of two separate interventions, exhaust ventilation in the garage and improved sealing of the garage-house interface wall, to reduce the ingress of polluted air from the attached garage into the adjoining home. This study demonstrated that these two methods were practical, low cost, and effective interventions to reduce air infiltration from attached garages into adjoining living spaces and reducing occupant exposures to harmful pollutants.
