SOCAAR is pleased to announce the next seminar for Feb 2019: Wednesday, February 6, 2019 3:00 - 4:00 PM 200 College Street, WB 407 Built Environment Interventions: A Case Study of the King Street Transit Pilot Study Impact on Mobility, Perceptions and Environmental Quality Tor H. Oiamo, PhD Assistant Professor Department of Geography and Environmental Studies Ryerson University Desislava Stefanova Outreach Coordinator Clean Air Partnership Abstract: This seminar will focus on findings from the King Street Pilot Study on Mobility and Environmental Perception. The study was part of a multi-component study of population and environmental impacts of the King Street Transit Pilot in the City of Toronto. The Pilot presented a unique opportunity to investigate how significant alterations within urban transportation systems can change human behaviour and perceptions about transportation environments. For this reason, a comprehensive assessment was developed to explore travel behaviour on King Street and individuals' perception of the environment. The results show a notable and positive impacts of the Pilot on user experience and perceptions of safety on King Street. Furthermore, the Survey Study found that citizens' perceptions of air quality and noise levels on King Street improved after the Pilot implementation. These findings will be presented in the context of observed changes in environmental quality and complemented by a discussion on challenges and opportunities presented by 'natural experiments' and research on built environment interventions.
