of Atmospheric Analytes in Remote and Indoor Atmospheres\nTrevor VandenBo
er\nVisiting Professor\nDept of Chemistry\nYork University\n\nAbstract: Re
active nitrogen plays key roles in atmospheric chemistry\, catalyzing the
production of ozone and formation of new particles from volatile precursor
s. Emissions of reactive nitrogen from the combustion of fossil fuels and
inefficient use of agricultural fertilizers has resulted in a modern world
with reactive nitrogen levels never seen before. Its transport to sensiti
ve and remote ecosystems can result in increased primary productivity or d
eleterious effects where nitrogen saturation occurs. Quantitative collecti
on and speciation of reactive nitrogen in remote locations poses analytica
l challenges from sampling through quantitative and speciated detection. T
he development of custom off-grid sampling equipment and extensive quality
control practices allowed us to capture reactive nitrogen biogeochemical
inputs from wet and dry deposition processes at the atmosphere-biosphere i
nterface across four field sites in the Newfoundland and Labrador Boreal E
cosystem Latitudinal Transect from 2013-2017. The indoor atmosphere poses
different yet similar analytical challenges with needs to measure many of
the same reactive nitrogen species in order to characterize relevant chemi
cal processes. Recent developments in reactive-nitrogen instrumentation an
d measurement techniques by our research group will be presented.\n\nDr. T
revor VandenBoer is currently a Visiting Professor and Adjunct Faculty mem
ber of the Department of Chemistry at York University. He is investigating
reactive nitrogen atmospheric chemistry with the Atmospheric Chemistry La
boratory and is funded by the Alfred P Sloan Foundation to develop new ana
lytical techniques for measuring reactive nitrogen as part of the Chemistr
y of the Indoor Environment program. He completed a combined Honours Bache
lor of Science degree in Analytical Chemistry and Forensic Science from La
urentian University in 2007. He has subsequently completed an MSc (2008) a
nd PhD (2012) in Environmental and Atmospheric Chemistry with Dr. Jennifer
Murphy from the University of Toronto. He held a Banting Postdoctoral Fel
lowship with Dr. Susan Ziegler at Memorial University in St. John’s\, Ne
wfoundland. Trevor’s ongoing research examines the biogeochemical intera
ctions of nitrogen between the biosphere and the atmosphere. Trevor has pr
eviously received funding from the Harris Centre at Memorial University\,
the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Forestry & Agrifoods Centre fo
r Forestry Science and Innovation\, and the Canadian Forestry Service.\n\n
