Nan was as generous as she was gifted and as brilliant a teacher as she was a scholar. I was fortunate to have been her student at Ohio State (thanks to Judy for
steering me to Nan and Andrea) where Nan managed (among many other feats) to create and sustain a feminist rhetoric seminar that was at once a rigorous, lively, and supportive community.

Nan was an exceptional mentor whose advice on both professional and personal matters I still aim to follow. She made me want to be my best self as a scholar and as a person. I am so grateful for Nan whose influence is wide and deep.

Beautifully said, Susan. You and Nan and Stan will remain as the highlights of all my Inkshed talent night memories. We’ve lost a great one.

Saturday's first blow was the news that Nan had died, followed quickly by Hurricane Dorian's wallop. Is that pathetic fallacy writ large?

When I met her I understood what Walter Pater said about a soul burning with a hard gem-like flame. But there was softness as well. I loved her.

Probably some inkshedders will have heard this sad news, but just in case: I’m passing on a letter Judy Segal wrote to the department at UBC, hoping that’s okay with Judy. I think it says something about Nan that all of us who knew her will find moving. Nan was an original Inkshedder, and someone who remains for me as vivid, and important, as anyone I’ve ever known.

Dear Colleagues,

Some of you will remember Nan Johnson, who was a member of our Department from 1981 to 1990. Nan was my doctoral supervisor, in fact. With Andrea Lunsford, Nan made me a rhetorician.

In 1990, Nan joined the English Department at The Ohio State University, and remained there until she retired last year.

Nan died on Saturday, from breast cancer that had become metastatic. Her family, including, especially, her wife, Abigail, and her daughter, Isabel, were with her.

Abby has sent me Nan’s obituary, and I include it here.
