In the latest/Science News
<http://www3.parkinson.org/site/R?i=9aCv8EdHq9vqzFbmKoWEBQ>/blog series
<http://www3.parkinson.org/site/R?i=6UmK6yOjDQqnUal74uyVWw>, we deep
dive into a study that is researching a connection between a genetic
form of Parkinson’s and a cough syrup called Ambroxol (not available in
the U.S.).

When the gene called GBA1 does not work properly, it can lead to the
build-up of unhealthy, misfolded clumps of alpha-synuclein in the brain.
These clumps, called Lewy bodies, impact dopamine production and are the
hallmark of PD. What if there was a way to prevent the build-up of Lewy
bodies in the first place?

A 2020 study set to find out if Ambroxol could cross the blood/brain
barrier, and function as a molecular chaperone (in other words, help the
GBA1 protein function properly). Keep reading

results and what they can mean for the PD community.
