& Mineral Engineering\nUniversity of Toronto\n\n\n\nHow Can We Minimize Po
pulation Exposure to Air Pollution ?\n\n\n\nOn-road transportation is the
main source of air pollution in cities\, and studying the influence of ant
hropogenic activities on air quality is essential for minimizing the impac
t of air pollution on human health. Air pollution is nevertheless a comple
x mixture of compounds reacting with each other and influenced by meteorol
ogical factors. Therefore\, understanding population exposure to air pollu
tion in urban centres requires more than quantifying emissions.\n\nThis ta
lk will explore how to minimize population exposure to air pollution by al
tering emissions and adapting urban designs. The discussed research will i
nclude 1) the impact on air quality of transportation policies targeting p
rivate passenger vehicles\, transit buses and commercial vehicles\; 2) the
influence of the design of bike lanes and residential areas on population
exposure.\n\n\n\nBiography\n\nDr. Laura Minet is a Postdoctoral Fellow in
Earth Sciences and Civil & Mineral Engineering at the University of Toron
to. She received her PhD from the University of Toronto\, her M.Sc. from M
cGill University\, and her B.Eng. and M.Eng. from Ecole Centrale de Nantes
(France). Laura works on a variety of projects ranging from the presence
of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food packaging to the imp
acts of traffic on greenhouse gas emissions\, urban air quality\, populati
on exposure and health. Laura has recently collaborated with the advocacy
group Environmental Defence as well as Ontario Public Health Association t
o highlight how electric vehicles and cleaner trucks can help reduce pollu
tion\, tackle climate change\, improve health and save lives in the Greate
r Toronto and Hamilton Area.\n\n__________________________________________
