ing\nUC Berkeley\n\nThink globally\, breathe locally: measuring inequity i
n air pollution from the global to neighborhood scales\nAir pollution expo
sure is the leading environmental risk for premature death globally and a
key cause of urban health disparities. Future choices about energy and tra
nsportation will profoundly change the levels and spatial patterns of urba
n air pollution around us. Yet pervasive gaps in current environmental mea
surement systems limit our understanding and predictive ability about the
air we breathe. New techniques for measurement and data analysis can illum
inate the relationships between urban infrastructure\, atmospheric emissio
ns\, and population exposures to air pollution.\nHere\, I present two inte
rlinked analyses that help frame the urban air pollution problem at the gl
obal and local scales. First\, I show how particle air pollution levels ha
ve evolved over the past two decades in every city in the world\, with a s
harp global divergence between cities in lower and higher-income countries
. Second\, using Google Street View cars and other specially equipped mobi
le air pollution laboratories\, we show how air pollution varies at fine s
patial scales within individual neighborhoods in the Bay Area and Bangalor
e\, revealing unexpected patterns of sources and pollution. Results from e
ach study emphasize profound considerations of equity and environmental ju
stice\, which I will discuss as a cross-cutting theme in this work.\n\n\n_
