The Role

 

The School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics wishes to appoint a full-time Lecturer in Early Modern Drama (Teaching and Scholarship), for 8 months, fixed term.  The start date is 1st January 2022 and the end date is 31st August 2022.

 

You will have a PhD (in hand) in a relevant subject area and a record of high-quality research-led teaching in Early Modern Drama, with an expertise in performance-based teaching.

 

You will be expected to co-teach a module on “Stagecraft:  Sex, Subversion, and Salvation in Early Drama” together with a medieval drama specialist. You will also convene a first-year survey module “Introduction to Literary Studies 2” (covering 10th- to 19th-century literature). You will be expected to supervise taught postgraduate independent work. 

 

The School of English Literature, Language & Linguistics currently has 62 members of academic staff (53FT and 9PT) working across the fields of Creative Writing, English Literature and Language and Linguistics. 16 Research Associates and Fellows and 9 Professional Services colleagues work with us and, together with our 750 undergraduates, over 100 taught postgraduates and a similar number of research students, we form a thriving and highly motivated intellectual community, dedicated to excellence and innovation in research and teaching. Over 80% of our research was deemed ‘worldleading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the 2014 Research Assessment Exercise and our teaching was rated as ‘excellent’ in the last QAA audit. It has exceptional research strengths in Medieval and Early Modern Literature and Theatre and Performance, providing a supportive research and teaching environment for the person appointed to this role.

Key Accountabilities

 

  • Co-teach a Stage 3 undergraduate module on “Stagecraft:  Sex, Subversion, and Salvation in Early Drama”, including facilitating performance-based workshops
  • Take responsibility for the role of Module Leader of Introduction to Literary Studies 2 (Stage 1 undergraduate module)
  • Design and deliver high quality teaching and learning materials and activities to undergraduate students in Early Modern Drama
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in the School and across the University
  • Undertake administrative duties as required by the Head of School
  • Provide pastoral support and mentoring for students
  • Contribute to the planning, design and development of modules and programmes to improve teaching across the School/Institute and Faculty
  • Integrate scholarship, research and/or professional activities with teaching and supporting learning, as appropriate

  
The Person (Essential)
 
Knowledge, Skills and Experience

 

  • Extensive teaching and learning experience at undergraduate level in Early Modern Drama with an expertise in performance-based teaching
  • Capacity and willingness to work as part of a team and mentor Postgraduate/Early-Career Teaching Assistants
  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly, and to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students and inspire them to learn
  • Evidence of research outputs in the field that are commensurate with career stage
  • Capacity and willingness to contribute to teaching, supervision and administrative work in the School
  • Experience of and willingness to deliver pastoral support of students at all levels
  • A commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in teaching and education

(Desirable)

  • Experience of teaching and research in Medieval Drama

Qualifications

 

  • PhD in hand in Early Modern Drama
  • A teaching qualification (Higher Education Academy Fellowship or equivalent) or the expectation of completing a teaching qualification while in post - desirable
