DESCRIPTION;LANGUAGE=en-US:Hi Everyone\,\n\nSOCAAR is pleased to announced
next Seminar.\n\n\nWednesday\, March 2\, 2022\n\n3:00 – 4:00PM\n\n\n\n\n
Prof. Sarah Haines\nAssistant Professor\n\nDepartment of Civil & Mineral E
ngineering\nUniversity of Toronto\n\n\n\nBridging the gap between microbio
logy and chemistry in built environments\n\nWe spend the majority of our t
ime indoors where the built environment has important implications for hum
an health\, particularly for those with asthma. Asthma disproportionately
impacts low-socioeconomic communities due to poor quality housing associat
ed with mold and moisture exposure. One of the main exposures to mold in h
ousing is through the resuspension of floor dust. Microbes grow in carpet
dust at elevated relative humidity conditions and release microbial volati
le organic compounds (mVOCs). However\, we do not know how the influence o
f moisture may drive species composition and chemical emissions from micro
bes in dust and on common building materials. Understanding these interact
ions in the indoor environment is the next frontier in environmental engin
eering and has the potential to lead to substantial improvements in public
health. Utilizing cutting edge techniques\, my work has ranged from colle
cting dust in carpet from homes in Ohio to analyzing dust particles from t
he International Space Station. Ultimately\, results from my work have dem
onstrated that microbial growth can be quantitatively modeled in buildings
\, and for the first time demonstrated interactions between chemicals and
microbes in house dust under elevated relative humidity conditions. My fut
ure work will link climate change\, social justice\, and viruses to contri
bute to healthy indoor environments.\n\n\n\n\n\n__________________________
