issions from road traffic\n\nAbstract:\nWhile the overall amount of partic
ulate matter from road traffic has decreased in past decades thanks to inc
reasingly stringent standards regulating exhaust emissions\, emerging evid
ence shows that particulate matter is also emitted from the wearing down o
f tyres\, brakes\, and road surfaces\, and from the resuspension of road d
ust. Particulate matter from these “non-exhaust” sources is less well-
understood than particulate matter from exhaust emissions\, and the policy
options to address them are consequently less well-explored.\nImportantly
\, non-exhaust particulate matter emissions will not be addressed by incre
asing the stringency of existing emissions standards. As a result\, almost
all particulate matter from road traffic is expected to come from non-exh
aust emission sources in future years.\nGiven the significant negative imp
acts of particulate matter on public health\, is incumbent on policymakers
to consider how to manage these emissions. This seminar synthesizes the s
tate of knowledge on the nature\, causes and consequences of non-exhaust p
articulate emissions from tyre\, brake\, and road wear as well as road dus
t\nresuspension\, as well as how particulate matter emissions from non-exh
aust sources will likely evolve in future years and identifies existing te
chnological and policy measures to mitigate these emissions.\n\n _________
