DESCRIPTION;LANGUAGE=en-US:Hi Everyone\,\n\nHappy New Year!\n\n\nSOCAAR is
pleased to announce our first SOCAAR Seminar for 2024:\n\n\n\nPlease join
us Online on:\n\n\n\nWednesday\, Jan 17\, 2024 3:00PM - 4:00PM EST\n\n3:00
PM - 4:00PM EST\nDr. Errol Thomson\n\nResearch Scientist\n\nInhalation Tox
icology Laboratory\, Health Canada\n\nDepartment of Biochemistry\, Microbi
ology & Immunology\, University of Ottawa\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrom biologic
al plausibility to predictive models: air pollution\, stress\, and determi
nants of toxicity\n\nAbstract:\nWhen epidemiological studies first showed
compelling evidence of associations between ambient levels of fine airborn
e particles and increased cardiopulmonary mortality\, toxicologists were c
hallenged to assess their biological plausibility. It is now generally acc
epted that air pollution is one of the top risk factors for mortality worl
dwide. However\, associations between exposure to air pollutants and an ev
er-increasing range of adverse health outcomes – including dementia\, de
pression\, obesity\, diabetes\; all conditions with a substantial and grow
ing population prevalence - continue to raise mechanistic questions. Moreo
ver\, the spatial and temporal variability of air pollution poses challeng
es in identifying key determinants of toxicity that would allow us to move
beyond mass-based standards.\nThis seminar will describe work establishin
g how the body’s stress response system – essential for survival but d
eleterious when chronically activated – acts as a key mechanism underlyi
ng systemic effects of air pollution on health. It will then describe how
toxicological tools are being applied to link biological effects to pollut
ant composition\, and hence source. Finally\, it will provide examples of
how use of more human-relevant toxicological tools\, and translation of to
xicological findings to the population\, may help us to better understand
factors underlying susceptibility and identify toxicity determinants.\n\n\
