Dear Barbara,

Re:sinemet reaction. I tried to send this info yesterday unsuccessfully so
once more>

At the initial diagnosis 1989, the neurologist prescribed sinemet. That
evening, probably with a meal I took the first half pill dose. My throat
felt as though it was closing, I developed mild abdominal cramping which was
annoying enough to keep me awake all night, and leg cramps. I called the dr.
in the a.m. and he said discontinue.

Now 4 years later I am taking it. Doctors ever since had been afraid to
prescribe it but after dancing around it, with nowhere else sensible to go,
Dr. Hurtig, chief neurologist of the Movement Disorder Clinic, at Graduate
Hosp., Phila. started me out thusly. The first dose was to be one QUARTER of
25/100 in the a.m. with FOOD. I was to keep at this level for two weeks.
Next increment was another QUARTER at noon again for two weeks. Third
increment a QUARTER with food always in evening. Then I started again at
the breakfast with a half this time. Somewhere along the way, I again
developed the closing throat so I had to hold the same dosage and back off
the increment for a month or so. Finally, about four months later, I am
still at A HALF three times a day.

The heavy doses of bromocriptine I was on then had to be reduced, again very
slowly, in this case, one half a tablet reduction every two weeks. From 5
and 1/2 tabs. of that five times a day, I am now down to one. Just this week
I was advised to add another quarter of the Sinemet.

However, a week ago today I accidently overdosed on both Sinemet and
Parsitan. In the case of the Sinemet, it equalled a whole tablet. I had the
feeling I was going to pass out, listed to the left and then the throat
business closed in. I knew that was the Sinemet. Long story short, I
survived by pacing the malls, drinking coffee, etc. Didn't want to go to a
hosp. because of complexity.

Anyhow, these medicines are potent; anything which affects the central
nervous system must be. I called my intro to Sinemet the bee venom
sensitivity doses.

HOpe this helps. At least you know you are not the only one to get in
trouble.

Sergio, I wonder how you are. How did you ever write from a hospital bed.
Think of you often and in prayer.

Will chat more later.
