Thank you, Simon, for your thoughtful information on the Hobsons' choices charities face. There are many problems with allocating funds in a democracy. We all get to lobby for ou own concerns .. on the other hand, the biggest, most vocal, or most media-attractive disease gets the dollars, both voluntary and government. Sometimes a benevolent dictatorship is very appealing. (I get to choose the dictator.) Doing Grateful Med computer research recently at the NY Academy of Medicine library here last week, when the line hung up occasionally, the librarian noted that "since the AidsLine had been made free, the system was often overwhelmed." Just the AidsLine. Now, if this is a zero-sum game, and it seems to be, where does that leave people researching PD and Eating Disorders or, like the woman next to me, Childhood Leukemia? I am close to the Aids crisis too, but I have to think this country is not willing to accept triage at any level.
