Break out Groups:

The afternoon is "Learn By Sharing" with others. For that reason
special sessions are designed for special groups. There
are special sessions for caregivers, male and female patients and
  newly diagnosed..

Speakers:

Dr. Lauri V. Laitinen, neurosurgeon, Stockholm, Sweden. Dr.
Laitinen has been performing pallidotomy and thalamotomy
surgery for many years. In 1992 and 1993 he published two
papers on his success with the pallidotomy. He has trained
almost all of the neurosurgeons in the US performing the
pallidotomy. He will be talking on the 100 pallidotomies he
performed in 1993. A panel of patients from a number of neuro-
surgeons performing pallidotomy will answer questions.

Emile Mercado, professional photographer in San Francisco, has
been diagnosed with PD for over 14 years. He has been
practicing the exercise/meditation of Tai Chi for his PD. He will
introduce us to this exercise art. Emile is also photographing
patients with PD for a book on the many faces of PD.

Joan Evans, LCSW, is supervisor of social workers at Seton
Medical Center in Daly City. She specializes in caring for
the caregiver. She has spoken at numerous symposia on
caregiving. A special educational supplement, soon to be released
by APDA is written by Joan.

Tom Riess, DPM, has had Parkinson's disease for 12 years.
Recently he started investigating the use of "Virtual Reality
Glasses" to help with the problem of akinesia (freezing) due
to visual queue phenomena. Tom will talk to patients and have
patients try the glasses to see if they get any benefit from
this application of VR. He will talk to both male and female
  groups of patients.

Newly diagnosed: This meeting we will have a special session
for newly diagnosed patients and their family. It is important
that family and patient attend this session together. A
short video will be shown along with a panel of "experts" on
medications, emotions and exercise. This panel will be support
group members. Thus it is families sharing with families.

Dr. Gordon Burton, PhD, is associate professor of occupational
therapy at San Jose State University in San Jose, CA. He has
a consulting service at SJSU on sexuality and sensuality along
with a private practice in Carmichael, CA. Dr. Burton is
working on applying virtual reality in teaching occupational
  therapy at SJSU.
