Dear Joanna: You arn't under any obligation if you call Elan NutraPharma and
ask for their "Quality of Life Through Balanced Nutrition" book. It's free.
It has menu plans using foods you buy at the grocery store incorporating
the 7:1 ratio of carbohydrates to protein. Call 1-800-473-3663. They don't
require you to buy their stuff to get the book developed by this company
along with leading neurologists (like Robert Feldman of UBC and Abe Lieberman
of APDA) and nutritionists. They sent me samples of their drinks and soup
which I liked because I'm lazy and they are convenient - so along with this
and one of the menus suggested I must admit it is easy to feel better. I am
someone who is very sensitive to protein, and even before taking levadopa
would crash after a high protein meal - so you know I was blocking my own
little bit of remaining natural dopamine. Before Elan 's 7:1 programme I
learned I felt better during the day when I ate all my protein at suppertime.
Then of course in the evenings I wasn't a ball of fire at all. The 7:1
routine is a better way to go.
Those getting the soup from Elan may find them too bland - try a little
tabasco sauce or some of the spicey vegetable juice added, like picante V8.
I like the drinks as they are but you can add extracts like mint or instant
coffee to the chocolate and almond to the vanilla, etc. Experiment.
