Hello everybody,
Re: "Disease"
Below is an extract reported in the "Parkinsons Network"
Bulletin 67, Oct./Nov. 1992

"At the 1992 Parkinson Foundation of Canada Annual General Meeting and
Conference in Edmonton Alta. Peter Kingston, National Board Member,
presented a strong request, supported by Bob Symons, President of Halifax/
Dartmouth Chapter," that the word "disease" (or the d-word) be actively
avoided, whenever possible, by the Foundation and its members."

All efforts will be made to comply with this request.

Additional endorsement was received from Dr.Donald Calne and his statement
was:"Doctors and Scientists may be the last to stop saying "Parkinsons
Disease" but in their dictionary a "disease" is defined partly in terms of a
cause, but we have no reason at this point to assume Parkinsons has a
simple cause.
By virtue of this, the word "disease" is not scientifically appropriate
and it is quite correct to use "Parkinsons" or to refer to it as a condition".

Furthermore, the Alzheimers Society has been very successful in eliminating
the "d-word" from their vocabulary.

Regards, Werner
