There has been only one patient, to my knowledge, who has had an implanted stimulation device in the the Globus Pallidus. The implant was performed by Dr. Robert Iacono at Loma Linda University Medical Center in Loma Linda, CA. The patient is doing very well. The device is similar to a pacemaker and stimulates the GP as needed. There is very little damage, if any, to the brain compared to the Pallidotomy. If you are interested in more information you should contact Dr. Iacono's office at (909) 796-4822. There are a number of studies where a similar implanted device is implanted in the thalamus. In this case the effort is aimed at controlling tremor. This has been shown to be very effective where tremor is destorying quality of life. In this case the implanted device is replacing the surgical procedure called a thalamotomy. Regards, Alan Bonander ([log in to unmask])
