Dear Meredith,
just a brief word about your mother's problem with her voice. An
amplifier (you can get neat little pocket ones ; ones that go in your
handbag; ones to stand on a table in meetings or at mealtime) would
be a solution provided that the difficulty is purely one of loudness. If
the sounds themselves are indistinct then amplifiers are not so good,
since they just amplify the distortions in a person's speech.
Contact your local speech language pathologist who specialises in
acquired neurogenic communication disorders - she should be able to
advise on whether an amplifier is appropriate. The clinic might have
one your mum can try on loan before you actually get your own.
The speech lang. pathologist should also be able to suggest other
aids to communication if an amplifier is not appropriate.
Hope the suggestion might help.
Best wishes,

Nick
