The study for the master's degree in pharmacy takes 5 years in Denmark. During the first two years we give the students a basis in chemistry (inorganic, organic, analytical, physical, and biochemistry), physics, and mathematics; then follow life sciences, social sciences and of course the technology of preparing and evaluating medicine. During the 5th semester they have to work on one of several projects within a common theme. This year about 25 students take up Parkinsons disease: the biochemical basis, the various medicines and so on. A group of 5 students, so are the plans, will try to understand the social and personal difficulties having PD (but they are allowed to change the subject within reasonable limits and to discuss other aspects of PD). They work part time on this project. My background as a teacher: I am an associate professor (and Ph.D.) at the Royal Danish School of Pharmacy, Department of Analytical and Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Age: 58. After several years of teaching chemistry, about five years ago I took charge of establishing a course in chemical toxicology (on 7th semester). Although I have no experience i PD, I agreed to take care of this group of five students. I have followed the discussions on this list for about two months and my impression is that the letters are relevant, sympathetic and of high quality. My idea is to let the five students subscribe to PARKINS (starting in a week or so and running to mid November). They have to follow the discussions, ask questions and reply if you ask questions to them. In November they have to present their work as a poster in this institution. This letter is not shown to the group. I hope you accept this concept and I hope you will engage in exchange of knowledge and opinions, and let them benefit from your experiences. One of the goals of the education here is that students learn how to behave to other people, this is important both when they get jobs and in all other situations. If you do not like the whole idea, go ahead and flame me. If the young students offend you, flame them (I will follow the process from my own PC).
