Reminder of Special Session at the 30th International Congress on Medieval Studies at Kalamazoo, May 4-7, 1995. "The Body in Pain--With Laughter: Perspectives on Middle English Drama" Needed: Papers addressing pain, suffering, torture, or brutality in Middle English Drama (in its texts, sources, or records), especially as they are juxtaposed against or contrasted with comic effects of the plays; or papers addressing the political nature of pain (speaking for, speaking as, or comforting the body in pain), especially as complicated by the comedy in the plays. Though the title of the session recalls Elaine Scarry's book, The Body in Pain, papers need not use Scarry's work. Performance-oriented, historical, textual, literary, and theoretical approaches are all welcome. As there has been a great deal of interest in the body and pain in the past several years, this should prove to be a lively session. Please send abstract and short cover letter to [log in to unmask] by 9/15 (or so).!
