A seizure in an older person should immediately lead to neurological testing, including an imaging study (CT or MRI scan), since late-onset seizures are usually the result of another illness. Insist on that evaluation and don't delay! Dilantin or some other anticonvulsant is a good idea in the meantime, but death from a single seizure is very rare unless the loss of consciousness occurs in a situation where the person falls or other injures themself (such as while driving).
