S My S father is 72 years old with P.D. & has done well since diagnosed almost eight S years ago. His condition is slowly deteriorating & although his primary care S physician seems interested & is very helpful, we have been very disappointed in S the few local specialists. They don't seem interested & are not helpful. As S time goes on, I will want to find a first class specialist & am willing to S travel some to see him with my dad. any suggestions appreciated. Thanks / S Woody Woody: It's very difficult to suggest or recommend somebody to everybody. Very easily the one who advises loses face, and wishes to hide in the center of the Earth when because of his suggestion something wrong happens and one would wish he never said anything, even if nobody blames you. This is more true in the slippery field of Medicine in general and neurology in particular, where the field of PD is so difficult because the specialist, someday, faces a situation that he, even if he tries very hard, is impotent up by the sickness and can't do more for his patient. Taking the above consideration, I nevertheless I unabashedly and without hesitation suggest you to travel to Denver and meet Dr. Christopher O'Brien. I have PD for at least 14 years. The first ten years the symptoms were very manageable, even in my case, which I admit is not very easy. I live in Mexico City and here I consulted, when my condition worsened, at least a dozen of the top specialists in the field ---and in the biggest City of the world there is no shortage of well trained, capable neurologists. Nobody could do more for me than the standard, typical ---and admittedly correct--- treatment of Sinemet, Bromocriptine, Permax, low protein diet, anti depressants, Deprenyl. I tried everything and so they. My job ---I was the owner and CEO of quite a large audiovisual, multimedia corporation--- allowed me to travel very often to the US where evidently I saw another half a dozen of even more capable and well-trained specialists for rutinary check ups, second opinion and informed, in contact with the state of the art. I saw that many mainly because of pressure of my wife and family. There was no complaint, nor I disapprove any of them, but eventually I had to stop working, confined to my home, a complete change of life. Then it was imperative to consult US specialists. That is how I met Doctor O'Brien four years ago. He can't do for your father more than any other first class specialist. But he has something that it's unique: a helping attitude combined with top professional credentials. He will listen to you. I travel 2,000 miles for consultation, and although he is very busy, whenever I have a question, we use E-Mail for communication. Dr. Christopher O'Brien Colorado Neurological Institute tel.: (303) 788-4650 fax: (303) 788-5418 I hope you don't need him, but if you do, I'm glad to be of help.
