Many good tips on this already, but one that hasn't been mentioned:
 
When you can't step forward, step a small step *back*, then rock forward
and go.
 
When you can't turn left, take a small step *right*, then rock to your
left foot and go.
 
Old Tai Chi Chuan principle: go the wrong way first!  Actually works!
