Keith - A Pallidotomy is not a new procedure. However there have been
new techniques used to make the operation more successful. It seems
that the procedure is most successful in reducing Tremor. The
negative side is the expense, the probable short term of effectiveness
- usually after a year or so the symtoms begin to return = and the
fact that it negates the possibility of future cellular transplant if
and when that procedure should become available. Your mother is still
fairly young and there can easily be a cure found during the remainder
of her expected life span. It seems to me that it would be a poor
trade to trade a year or so of partial relief for the chance to have a
complete or near complete cure. Before proceeding with the operation I
would suggest that you try different medication. 12 Sinemet a day
is a very high dosage even if it is 25/100 and probably has a bearing
on her dyskinesia. You might talk with your neurologist about the
possibility of substituting a drug such as Permax for some of the
Sinemet. This program needs to be installed under the guidance of a
good neurologist as there can be negative reactions if the change is
done too rapidly or in the wrong manner.......ED H
