There's Ruth Keane's Liverpool MA thesis on (?Theories of) Kingship in the Chester Cycle, and she also published an article with a similar title in Leeds Studies in English, perhaps in the 1970s or early 80s (my references are at home, and as it's now late on Friday afternoon it's better to let you have a rough reference now).
