Jesse Hurlbut writes, "Are there other ways in which the very real became part of the play?" I would respond that the use of contemporary law and courtroom procedures in trial scenes, might be another way that local "reality" was incorporated into a play involving accusations of crimes and defense. See the bibliography compiled by Alford and Seniff on law in medieval literature, as well as Jody Enders recent book. (Sorry the references are not to hand, but I could send them if you like). I am working on the topic also, "English Law in the York Trial Plays," is based on a chapter of my doctoral dissertation (University of Toronto, 1987), and is to be presented at the next SITM conference in Toronto. I look forward to your comments and suggestions about this area of study. Elza Tiner Lynchburg College
