No dictionary and ONE SHEET OF PAPER!!! Bizarro is an understated
understatement. What do they ask the students to do with that single
sheet (and in how much time)? How is it evaluated? (And are the
studednts allowed to use pens or pencils--folding might work better,
at least to produce something that could fly.) You're right, such a
test says a lot about somebody's view of writing--and of testing and,
specially of students. And this view apparently makes some sort of
sense of a much larger group of people?!?
This view should be laughed at, not given the credibility of
a serious refutation--tho, of course, in reality, for the students'
sake, one should be politic, not honest.
