Man dies in bizarre elevator accident

NEW YORK (Reuter) - An 82-year-old Asian man was killed Monday in a
bizarre accident after falling off a hospital gurney when the elevator he was
on dropped a floor and he suffered a heart attack, police said.

``The man, a resident of Gouveneur's Hospital who was afflicted with
Parkinson's Disease, was on an elevator of the residential facility and was
being transferred from the 10th floor to a clinic on a lower floor when it
suddenly began to fall,'' a police spokesman said.

The elevator was at the sixth floor when a hospital employee started
pulling the gurney onto the elevator and it started to drop to the fifth
floor, Detective Julio Martinez, a police spokesman, said.

The man fell off the gurney to the elevator floor and suffered head and
facial injuries. As hospital rescuers tried to remove the man from the
elevator, he went into cardiac arrest, he said.

The man was rushed to Beekman Downtown hospital, where he died. His name
is being withheld until next of kin are notified, police said.
