WRITING AND COMPUTERS EIGHT
7th - 9th September 1995
Institute of Education, University of London, UK

UPDATE

This is a brief update of progress for WC8 (The eighth annual UK
Writing and Computers conference). It contains information about
keynote speakers, papers received, the software exhibition,
symposia, the social program, online discussion, a BCS meeting and
deadlines.

Conference arrangements are progressing well under the capable
control of Christina Preston at the Institute of Education,
University of London. Keynote speakers will be Michael Barnett,
professor of technology and closet poet, and Gunther Kress whose
field is iconography and communication. The conference has been
promoted more widely than usual this year and has already attracted a
variety of papers on topics as diverse as readability, rhetoric,
deep-thinking and creative authorship. Offers for the software
exhibition are encouraging and this will provide an interesting
and useful complement to the academic proceedings. There are also
plans a selection of the best papers to be published as a book. More
details to follow.

SOCIAL PROGRAM
On the social side exact arrangements have yet to be confirmed but
there are rumours of sponsorship for a sherry reception, a computer
generated poetry reading and dinner at a London club.

SYMPOSIA Symposia on the role of the creative author in software
design and on cognitive models of the writing process have been
suggested. If you are interested in contributing to either. Contact
Christina Preston ([log in to unmask]) if you would like to contribute
to the former and me ([log in to unmask])if you are
interested in contributing to the latter. Feel free also to suggest
(and organise) your own symposia

BCP ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING MEETING
The British Computer Society Electronic Publishing Special Interest
Group are meeting on the 6th September at SOAS which is on the same
site as the Institute of Education. Those who wish to attend this as
well can be accommodated in University rooms for the extra night.

ONLINE DISCUSSION
We plan to facilitate online discussion of conference themes through
a group of discussion lists that will run for four to six weeks either
side of the on-site event. Whether or not you are intending to attend
the conference, you are warmly invited to join in. Things will be
coordinated through the wc8-announce list. This is a moderated,
low volume list that also carries conference announcements. To join the
list send the following, and nothing else, in the body of an email
