Dear Claudia,
Bradyphrenia refers to cognitive slowing that SOME NOT ALL Parkinson's
disease patients experience. It is different from depression (which can
also present with cognitive slowing). The way to detect it is by doing
certain psychological testing. It probably does not result from the dopamine
depletion that underlie the motor symptoms. Currently, there is no definite
treatment although in our center we are investigating treatment strategies
for this condition. A reference that gives some background is:
Bradyphrenia in parkinsonism:a historical view
By D Rogers in: Psychol. Med. 1986 May; 16(2):257-65.
