The Parkinson Europe Networking Group ( PENG!), as it is now named, has seen life in Utrecht on April 21st. Its programme seeks to allow as many parkinsonians, families and associates as possible in the different European countries to benefit from the most effective use of information technology. It wants to contribute enriching their own information but also their social and professional life by giving them aceess to data bases and enabling them to collect and dispatch relevant information. The main axes of the programme are the following 1. set up networks accessible to both english speaking people and people speaking only their national languages, 2. find ways to educate Parkinsonians and the Associations on new information technologies 3. test and select the most effective and user-friendly tools and methods through local projects 4. enable parkinsonians in each country to take advantage of international experience through exchange of ideas and development of comon tools 5. enable parkinsonians to continue making active contribution to both social and professional life through networking. 5 project leaders have already been designed to work on the following project: 1. setting up a computerized BBS in an EPDA network 2. defining, gathering, and disseminating parkinson's and related information by computer databases (PIBI) accessible by datalines, telephone and other means 3. increasing usage of information technology through proactive collection of hardware and software as well as appropriate training 4. increasing awareness of the Parkinsonian condition through Culture, Arts and Education initiatives and use of multimedia technologies 5. Enabling Parkinsonians to continue professional and social activities through the developpement of commercialised services through telewaorking. I understand that you are going to meet one of our project leaders, on May 13. As a matter of fact, Kees Paap, Chief Officer for the "Parkinson Information Bank" in Europe is going to speak during the spring conference of the Toronto Chapter of the Parkinson foundation of Canada and could give you additional detail about the PENG. I would be most interested to know if you are aware of similar experiences elswere and to share information on those subjects with interested people and institutions. Also, since I have a chance to do it, congratulations for your BBS. It looks as a very interesting one! regards. Coments and advices from your list members are most welcome and 8OO+ listmembers, that is a lot of people to share experience with.
