        Dear John Baker,

As far as I am aware, there is only one centre in England that performs
pallidotomies, and that is somewhere in the Midlands (Birmingham, Manchester
or Leeds - I can't remember which)

In March 1995 Bob Archer mailed the PD list to tell us that his mother
had just had the first pallidotomy in the UK ; it may be worth contacting him
about the details of this operation here (email: [log in to unmask])

As for recommending a physician, one of the leading Parkinson
specialists here (perhaps *the* leading specialist in the UK) is Dr A.J. Lees,
who can be found at The National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, Queen's Square,
London ; it should be possible to get a referral for your mother-in-law to see
him if you feel she is up to the travelling. My dads PD (he's 66, diagnosed
6-7 years ago) has been well managed by Dr Lees ; certainly by comparison to
some of the medical horror stories you occasionally hear on this list

Hope your trip goes well (at least the weather may be good !)

John Eady ([log in to unmask])
