I wouldn't predict any rude awakenings here, Darrell, I think a conferencing system makes a terrific supplement to other kinds of group work, discussion and practice in a face-to-face setting. We use FirstClass in ways that have already been very thoroughly discussed on this list, extending discussion, responding to one another's drafts, posting to a class bulletin board and responding to the postings of others. FirstClass is extremely (student) user friendly--the only "knock" against it is that its not internet standard and so requires an internet gate to email to someone outside of the FirstClass environment.
