I'm using FirstClass, through the Computer Assisted Writing Center, quite
regularly with a writing class here at York--though what we're using it for
is also quite doable (and I've done) with emacs and mail in a unix
environment.

I wouldn't predict any rude awakenings here, Darrell, I think a conferencing
system makes a terrific supplement to other kinds of group work, discussion
and practice in a face-to-face setting. We use FirstClass in ways that have
already been very thoroughly discussed on this list, extending discussion,
responding to one another's drafts, posting to a class bulletin board and
responding to the postings of others.

FirstClass is extremely (student) user friendly--the only "knock" against it
is that its not internet standard and so requires an internet gate to email
to someone outside of the FirstClass environment.
