Current Parkinson's Topics by E-Mail for New and OLD Subscribers Welcome new subscribers! Everything ever discussed on the Parkinsn list is in our archives. Periodically, a file called, "How to find information in Parkinson Archives by E-mail" is posted on the Parkinsn list. "How to find information in Parkinson Archives by E-mail" gives step by step instructions on how to search and get stuff in an easy to learn manner. Many of you have learned about the Parkinsn list from friends or reading the Wall Street Journal and New York Times articles about pallidotomy. This message gives answers on how to directly use the Parkinsn archives and get information NOW while you are "coming up to speed". Save the following between the Snips to a TXT file on your computer. HOW DO I SAVE THIS? (Windows users instructions ONLY, Mac Users are on their own) Move your mouse to the start of the text in this message that you want to save and click the left button. Once the cursor starts to blink on the correct line, hold down the left button while dragging the mouse to the right and down until all the area is highlighted. Release the mouse buttons. At the top of your screen is a heading labeled Edit. Move the mouse up to Edit and click on it. You will see a item labeled Copy. Click on it. If you are using Windows, hold down the Alt key and tap the Tab key until you toggle back to the Program Manager. Click on the Notepad icon, which will open it. When it opens, select Edit at the at the top of the screen with the mouse, by clicking on it. Select Paste by clicking on it. The information that you highlighted in the message is pasted into Notepad. At the top of the screen to the left of Edit is File. Move the mouse to File and click on it. You will see an option called Save As. Click on it. A window will open. The directory shown at the right may not be the directory that you keep text files in so click on the C:\ which will give you a list of all the subdirectories on the C drive. If you have more than one drive, at the bottom of the right hand column is the option to change the drive. If you want to change to the D drive for example, do it and then return to the top and click on the D:/ to see the complete list of subdirectories. Click on the correct one. If you already have some text files in that subdirectory, their names will appear in the left hand column. I call my file, index.txt, but you can name yours anything with not more than 8 letters and .txt as an extension. After you have entered the name in place of the *.txt and clicked on OK, it is saved. NOW THAT I HAVE SAVED THIS FILE, HOW DO I USE IT? If you post messages with a mail program that has a button marked Insert, or Include, simply click on the button, while the cursor is blinking in the body of the message, and show it how to get to where index.txt or what ever name you gave it, is. It will magically appear in the body of your message. If you use Eudora which doesn't have these capabilities, do the following. Open Notepad first and load index.txt, or whatever you call it. Highlight the text with the mouse. Select Edit and the Copy option. Start Eudora if you already haven't done so or use the Alt-Tab keys to toggle over to it. Select Message at the top of the Eudora screen. Select New on the menu. The cursor will not be in the body but on the Subject or To: line. Move the cursor to the body and click on it. Move the cursor back to the top of the screen and select Edit and Paste from that menu. Your index.txt will appear in the body. If you intend to send several messages to the listserv, use the Message/New command and the previous instructions to copy as many messages as you need. In each message just add the message numbers that you want sent to you. You will use this to get answers to your questions by return E-mail from the [log in to unmask] which is the repository of the Parkinsn archives. The listserv is a machine untouched by human hands so don't include anything else in your requests for information. Send all requests for E-mail to: [log in to unmask] In the body of the message paste, insert, or import the following into your message. ---------------------------------Snip-------------------------------- //DBlook JOB Echo=No Database Search DD=Rules //Rules DD * select * in parkinsn print all -------------------------------- Snip ------------------------------- On the same line as the PRINT ALL (Caps just for emphasis) put the ITEM#(Caps just for emphasis) or numbers separated by a space. Suppose, that you want the messages whose item# are to the right of Pallidotomy, "Snake Oil" or Science? The Careful View. Prepare a message to: [log in to unmask] Leave the subject line blank if you wish or put anything in there. This line is not read by the listserv. In the body of the message, insert the part you saved to a text file that was between the Snips. This is the language that the listserv understands. //DBlook JOB Echo=No Database Search DD=Rules //Rules DD * select * in parkinsn print all Before you start adding Item#s to the print all line, there is something you must know about the listserv. If the number of lines contained in the Item#s you select exceeds about 700 lines you may not receive all the messages because of truncation. Mentally add up the total number of lines of the messages that you select to stay under 700. The Recs column shows the number of lines that the message contains. We're ready to order some messages now. //DBlook JOB Echo=No Database Search DD=Rules //Rules DD * select * in parkinsn print all 1961 1964 1988 1700 Send the message. In a few minutes the return messages will be in your mailbox. DISCLAIMER: Information contained in the archives is for informational purposes only and is not intended to be a guide for self diagnosing or self medicating. Your own neurologist or family doctor AND you are the best judge as to what treatment strategies should be taken in your case. An uninformed patient can be at risk if they don't know what treatment options are available and doctors can be faulted for not asking diagnosing questions in terms that the patient can understand. The medical resources here attempt to get the patient, care-giver and the treating doctor familiar with the terms of the disease. Problems? Some of the documents are multi-part and must be loaded into a word processor in order. Delete the headers on the messages. Be careful of the last sentence in a section and the first sentence of the next section. Punctuation may be wrong and if a sentence is cut in two parts, they need to be rejoined. If you have problems, and get error messages instead of data from the listserve, don't be embarrassed, send E-mail to [log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask] explaining the problem and I will solve it for you.
