Jeff,

Tardive Dyskinesia is not a form of PD. In fact it is closely related to
the dyskinesia that many of us experience from our L-DOPA. Stelazine and
most other drugs found in the category of neuroleptics are dopamine blocking
agents. Unfortunately most of these drugs block dopamine in the basal
ganglia as well as the other areas of the brain which are involved in the
theraputic antipsychotic effect which they exert. When dopamine is blocked
for an extended period of time the basal ganglia respond by increasing their
sensitivity to dopamine- just as they do in pd patients who endogenously
have low dopamine. Eventually the "receptor sites" where the dopamine acts
becomes "supersensive" and causes the dyskinesia that both PD patients and
TD patients experience.

I hope this is useful,

 Charlie
