RE: "Parkinson Plus" -- in addition to the Shy-Drager syndrome there are several other conditions which have some PD-like symptoms.w3 Dr.Roger Duvoisin in his book Parkinson's Disease, a Guide for Patient and Family, classes all these disorders as multiple system atrophies, and says they are often very hard to distinguish from regular PD. He includes progressive supra- nuclear palsy, olivopontocereballar atrophy, striatonigral degeneration, and states these account for 20% of cases of parkinsonism seen today. His book is an excellent brief resource, and is often made available to support groups by Merck, Sharp & Dohme pharmaceutical company, which makes SINEMET. The small pamphlet, Parkinson's Disease Handbook, published by APDA and distrubuted by many doctors to new patients, or free to groups, lists in addition several other conditions often confused with PD because they share some symptoms, such as tremor. Hope this is helpful. Camilla Flintermann, Oxford,OH
