Fellow CASLLers:

Our administration at the University College of the Cariboo has asked for
a survey of post-secondary writing centers across Canada. A number of us
hope that this is the beginning of a move to get a writing center here at
UCC. We already have a room and two computers--but no permanent staffing.
In the last few years we've relied on a few faithful peer tutors and minor
English department input, but that structure needs changing.
Now we need your input in the form of responses to a survey.

When I've mentioned the survey to some of you, you've welcomed the idea for
your own information too. If you want a copy of our results, please
indicate that in response to #19.

Susan Bell, the UCC research assistant for this project, has done a lot
of background reading and is now prepared to work on your input. You
may respond directly on the CASLL listserv simply by "reply"--ing, or
you may send a private response to Susan at

(You may also send side notes to me--praise or blame, but don't expect
a quick response, since I'm hoping to get away for a week.)

If you have supporting printed information (reports, brochures, other
written descriptions), please send that to Susan as well:

If the term "writing center" doesn't fit your situation well, please explain
why not in your response to #2.

Here is our questionnaire:

1.) What is the enrollment size of your school?
2.) Do you have a student support service that could be classified as a
         writing center?
3.) How would you (generally) define your writing assistance facility?
4.) What is the philosophy of your writing center? Does it have a
        mission statement and defined policy?
5.) Is the writing center staff involved in developing tutoring
        programs, workshops, and resources?
6.) What proportion of the student population does the writing center
serve: certain programs or departments; all students; faculty?
7.) Where does the writing center fit into the administrative structure
        of your institution?
8.) How is the writing center staffed?
9.) Where is the writing center physically located?
10.) What facilities, equipment, and resources does the writing center offer?
11.) How many hours per day is the writing center open?
12.) What is the usage per semester?
13.) How is the writing center funded?
14.) How is the writing center service evaluated?
15.) What kind of promotion/public relations activities do you use to
raise awareness of the writing center's services?
16.) What helped you most in establishing your writing center?
17.) What caused you the most grief in establishing your writing center?
18.) Who are other contacts we should question--probably persons not on the
CASLL listserv but vitally interested in writing centers in Canada?
19.) Would you like a copy of our survey results? (If so, please provide
an address, both smail and e-mail.)
 20.) Any final comments?

Thanks for your help.
