Find yourself a local BBS. I pay a BBS $30.00 a year. It allows one hour
per day of connection time. I call every night and use about three
minutes to download my messages. Then I spend maybe an hour reading and
replying.
It is a little more difficult to start out than with a commercial
service like prodigy. You have to have a communications program to make
calls --- I use telix which came from a BBS. You will need a mail reader
--- I use slmr2.1a (silly little mail reader --- yes, really!) which
came from a BBS (free), and a compressor/decompressor --- I use pakware
which came from a BBS (honor system).
